Hashigo Zake is a colloquial Japanese term, usually translated as "bar-hopping" or occasionally as "pub crawl".
The literal meaning is more like "liquor ladder". Hashigo - - means ladder, and it seems an ideal metaphor for the experience
we beer lovers have when we move from one glass of lovingly-made, flavourful ale to another, similar-but-different drink.
Each one is a reminder of some facet of the brewer's craft and stimulates a diverse and unique set of flavour receptors.
Each one a rung on a ladder to some unattainable goal of perfection. That is to say, we assume it's unattainable, but one more pint will help us know for sure.
"And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven."
